Johann Jost Merdten arrived April 1714 with his wife Maria Kathrina according to his affidavit filed to obtain 100 acres of land by head right. Some writers have said that his wife was Maria Kathrina Otterbach, daughter of Hermannus Otterbach and Elizabeth Heimbach. At this time no definitive proof of this marriage has been located.
Merdten was an elder of the German Reformed Church at Germantown serving with Rev. Henry Häger who was the pastor. Johann Jost Merdten was one of the elders who signed the 1719 petition from the Germantown church that Zollikoffer carried to Europe to help raise money to build a church building.
